Peas, "Pills" and Parkinson's - Author: Alice Crooker

Peas,” Pills,” and Parkinson’s is the story of Alice Crooker’s battle with Parkinson’s disease and her unusual life with highly irregular people and situations.  From her birth when her mother suffered from post partum psychosis to the shocking diagnosis of PD at age 49 she uses humor and insight to describe her life and ultimately her battle with this misunderstood and relatively neglected disease.  Her struggles include a series of misdiagnoses and a long trail of abandoned doctors prior to finding the competent team of physicians at Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle.   There she was given hope and a medical procedure which gave her life back.   This is a story of struggle and triumph, despair and hope and an abiding faith in God.  All proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to the Virginia Mason Hospital Foundation for improving the lives of Parkinson’s patients.  Your interest and support are greatly appreciated

Frustrated with a salaried employee's life and insular upbringing, Abe struck out on his own to become a successful entrepreneur with a will to risk.

He eventually sought his fortune in Middle East where he encountered a very different mentality and business culture; and where events would change his political attitudes.

Just as the money began rolling in, he and his family became caught up in the danger and tragedy of the Lebanese Civil War.  Despite being robbed, shot at and kidnapped, he remained in Lebanon even after westerners had fled as a matter of self-preservation.

Although financial ruin finally impelled him to leave, he returned a year later and was hailed as "The First American Back."

In his travels throughout the Middle East he met with representatives of princes, kings and the Shah of Iran.

Le Cafe' de Cadix and Grandmere's Awesome Family Cookbook - Author: Pierrette Lilli Camps

From the age of twelve at the start of World War II, until I met my American G.I. husband, I worked in the café my parents owned in Bab-el-oued, a working-class neighborhood in Algiers. My parents, whose stories we treasured, were exceptional in many ways. My father Salvador was a constant, reassuring presence in our lives. My mother Rose, epitomizing mind over matter, treated neighbors afflicted with typhoid fever, typhus, malaria, meningitis, and even cholera! She was absolutely certain she would never catch anything; according to her, because she never charged anyone, rich or poor, for her services, and she was guaranteed God’s protection! And neither she nor her four children ever caught any of the diseases that afflicted the people she cared for. I recall the neighbors, the customers at Le Café de Cadix, Arabs, Jews, and Latinos-mixed French, now called pieds noirs, who exuded a joie de vivre rarely found anywhere.

Grandmére's Awesome Family Cookbook
Pierrette Lili Camps-Komarek & Family

You would think that the one thing the world doesn’t need is another cookbook. Surely, every imaginable cuisine, from traditional to trendy to dietary, has been covered ad nauseam in text, pictures, recipes and reference tables. So, you can understand my reluctance when yet another cookbook, this one entitled Grandmère’s Awesome Cookbook, by Pierette Lili Camps, flew onto my desk. Frankly, it was the book’s charming front cover illustration that seduced me into parting the cover from its pages, thus saving it from certain obscurity. Thank goodness for that—and I mean that literally!—because Madame Camps’ bouquet of culinary delights is not only a treasure, but quite a unique one.

Forget designer cuisine and trendy art cooking that should be photographed rather than eaten—this is a first-generation virtual bible of authentic, cross-cultural, home cooking recipes, authored by a seasoned world traveler, her multi-nationally rooted, cottage-spun creations as tantalizingly tasty and pallet-pleasing as they are satisfying. From hearty, unpretentious, hungry-tummy dishes, to piquant, aromatic, exotic yet simple, delights, your dinner guests will be so enchanted by the diverse, albeit synergistic, textures, flavors and scents, that they will most likely keep you hostage in the kitchen for a long time to cook more and more of where that came from…

No, the world did not need another cookbook—except for this one (a MUST-get)! If you’re not a cook, this book will make you into one (while amused by Madame Camps’ delightful stories and anecdotes). And if you are one, it will make you an even better one. So, get your copy, turn on the stove, call everyone to the table, then enjoy the journey!

Happy cooking and bon appetite!

The Dynamic Great Lakes - The Wilderness Within - Sophia's Lost and Found: Poems of above and below - Author: Barbara Spring

The five Great Lakes, Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Erie and Lake Ontario with their connecting waters are the world’s largest freshwater system; about 20 per cent of all the fresh surface water on this planet. Each lake differs from the other and yet these connected lakes are one flowing system connected to the Atlantic through the St. Lawrence River. Unique ecosystems evolved in these lakes since the last Ice Age but in the last 200 years commercial fishing and the Lamprey Eel wiped out larger fish. Shipping on the Great Lakes from all parts of the world has brought exotic species that threaten to topple food pyramids. Pollution carried through the air and water damages life in and around these lakes. Through knowledge, and the democratic process, The Dynamic Great Lakes encourages us to appreciate and understand these lakes and to get involved in finding answers to their problems.

These poems, along with a few travel stories, are a joyous form of word play that embodies life itself. The poems range from the Great Lakes, to Africa, to the Galapagos, and Mexico. They go places never visited before.

Sophia's Lost and Found returns riches that can never be lost in unexpected abundance, peoples, places, birds, fishes, animals, ores and elements return again and again.  Each poem is a celebration of connections among living networks of life in this world and unseen worlds.

I Haven’t Forgotten

People say that time eases the pain.
But I haven’t forgotten.
I haven’t forgotten how much I wanted you.
I haven’t forgotten how much you meant to me.
I haven’t forgotten how good you smelled.
How sweet you looked.
How much I needed you…

I am filled with joy when I see how you might have been.
When I look in Kyra’s eyes,
I see you.

I miss you.
I love you.
I wonder how it would have been.
My life will never be the same…

I love you Samantha.

Love,
Mommy (9-11-2006)

Nobody's Child - Author: Anne Kelly

'The country is in the grip of a terrible disease which arrived in 1845, it was called the blight. Potatoes, which were the main source of food, rotted and each new crop suffered the same fate. The potatoes, which could usually have been bought for 3½ pence a stone, soared in price to 6½ pence, putting them out of reach of the majority of Irish people already hit hard by demands for high rents and who, by now, were dying in their thousands, many falling in the roads and lanes as they went out looking for work to assuage the terrible hunger. Typhus and other scourges hit the people, probably in some part, caused by the Indian meal given as an aid to the country. This in itself was the cause of many deaths as it was often undercooked and eaten cold and raw. In desperation for food, people carried out a practice of bleeding cows and using the blood mixed with the rotten potatoe as a revolting soup, such was the effect of the great hunger. Each day the workhouse's 'dead cart'emptied body after body into mass graves for burial; such was the scale of the tragedy. With fever, dysentry and diarrhoea on the increase and little or no food to be had, everyday life spiralled into a living nightmare for the people of the land.

Sin of the Poppas - Author: James McKinley Hibbard

James McKinley Hibbard is named after Grand Poppa. His grandmother is quoted as saying, “I wouldn’t have named a devil after that man! Not the devil himself!” This was the start of a generational curse that would plague the life of this child and generations to come. James gives a heartbreaking account of violence, deaths, alcoholism, affairs, crimes, immoralities, car wrecks, prison, murder, physical abuse, and much more! Through his eyes we experience his painful moments, his humor, and his desperation to save his children, their children, and all children from such anguish. Is Sin of the Poppas truly a non-fictional book about a generational curse? Or is it just another story of “the devil made me do it” criminal life? Read about the miracles and the tragedies of this author’s life. Then, you be the judge!

In This Valley I Grew & Poems Prayers and Promises of an Appalachian Woman - Author: Mary Ellen Goble Preece

In This Valley I Grew is my own story of growing up in the ’50s and ’60s in a small Appalachian neighborhood on the outskirts of a town called Inez, population 500. It is a story of hardships, innocence, and faith. It describes the people who lived all around me, who, in some way or other, helped shape and mold my life into what it is today. I can honestly say that there isn’t one person in my childhood who left such a negative impression on me that I’d rather not remember him or her. It is my prayer that those of you who read my stories get the feeling that I am just talking to you face to face, in a relaxed way, recounting the events of my life as I remember them and that you find yourself reliving them with me, or better yet, that they bring back your memory, things you had long forgotten, and that a smile might cross your lips and make your day a little brighter. If you don’t like sentiment then you probably won’t like this book, for that is the only way I know how to tell it, through the eyes of love as I saw it and through my heart’s emotions as I felt them. God Bless!

Poems, Prayers and Promises of an Appalachian Woman
Mary Ellen Goble Preece
Poems, Prayers and Promises of An Appalachian Woman is meant to lift the spirit, and is intended for the whole family. It reveals my relationship with the Lord, in my frailties and in my strengths. It deals with how I have looked at tragedies, in both personal and in general circumstances. Some are intended to have a touch of humor as I have found many things funny after a look back on them. But mostly I hope they touch that inner soul of those seeking the Good Lord’s love to know in their life. To the Christian, I hope they give you a blessing, with a renewed strength in what God can do in your life.

It's All an Act - Santo Colabufo

If you're in a management position with a large corporation, driven by ego, and think it's all about you, a word of caution: this book isn't for you! The art of management is the ability to focus on the point-of-service worker and help them to perform well. Provide your employees with a comfortable work environment, the proper tools and resources to do the job, and then get out of their way. Far too often in today's corporate world managers become the focal point and employees spend more time servicing the selfish, internal needs of management rather than servicing the customer. Did the corporate world forget who brings in the revenue and the reason they are in business in the first place? When you take care of your employees they will take care of your customers.

If you're in a management position, maybe your road to success is different than you think.

What A Long, Strange Trip It Has Been - Author: Kelley Culver

In 1972, Kelley Culver was a newly married, college dropout with few, if any, good prospects.  Hoping to avoid the draft and Vietnam, which seemed the most likely course his life would take, Kelley enlisted in the U.S. Air Force.  What started out, as a short-term goal became a 23-year career.  This book recounts many of the events that helped shape his career.  From his beginnings as an Air Force airman, Kelley advances through the ranks to eventually retire as a major.  Along the way, he finds himself in situations that are often funny, sometimes dark, but always realistic.  A career that included service as an emergency room technician, nuclear missile operations officer, and commander of a squadron during Desert Shield/Storm, Kelley’s story is full of interesting people and unexpected opportunities and shows that, with a little confidence in yourself, you can accomplish much more than you ever imagined.
