I was inspired to write Moe’s Hallowed Eve  by one very old cat who is losing his hearing and his sense of smell.  Moe is one of the three homely cats who live in the country with Wooffer.

Moe's Hallowed Eve by Betty Fasig, is a cute story I would recommend to anyone wanting to read a story about animals and the critters that roam around outside. she puts together a story of friendship between a dog named Wooffer and a cat named Moe who doesn't see or hear very good. I don't want to give the story away by saying much more. Ms. Fasig is a talented story teller and I am looking forward to reading more of her work. Good Job, I loved the story!!!

Chalk - D. K. Christi

D. K. Christi Speaks About Chalk:
I remember the large, white chunks of chalk that were a staple in the early train days for writing on boxcars. Generous engineers would throw pieces to the eager children running to the sound of the train whistle, thinking they were being kind. Instead, the dangerous practice had disastrous results. This story is about the bonds of friendship and surviving tragedy.

My Viet Nam Vet - D. K. Christi

D.K. Christi Speaks About My Viet Nam Vet:
It is not only the men who fought in Viet Nam that experienced the horrors of that war and the terrible homecoming for the men who fought. Many have never recovered fully from the drugs, the terrors and the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The women of that generation who try to love their men again, often find themselves victims of domestic abuse and their own confusion, loving a man who is now incapable of returning that affection. This story chronicles in fable and by example, the complex emotions these couples face.

Maddie's Christmas Spider Lily - D. K. Christi

D. K. Christi Speaks About Maddie's Christmas Spider Lily:
The story of Maddie's Christmas Spider Lily is based on a true experience by the author but has been modified to create a fiction, short story. The basic premise of the story, a photograph in Mexico and a surprise spider lily in Florida that ties to a memory of Maddie (name changed) is true and remains one of life's mysteries. The red spider lilies in Mississippi are also a true aspect of the story. The spiritual quality of the beautiful flowers and the women they represent is memorable and inspirational.

Don Stephens captures the feeling and memories that we would like to all have of our own fathers. Don realized the sacrifices that were made for him and returned the love his father showed him. I really liked this story. It's great to read a story where someone's been there, done that and questioned their sanity in the process. Although, the writer was in the paratrouper's, he still has our Marine Corps attitude of 'do or die'. I could feel the anxiety when he was preparing to take that first long step out of the plane and the sense of accomplishment when he did. Good writing. Made me feel like I was right there with the writer.

Take the first jump when everything is a blur, then if you have the nerve take the second. Don gives us an inside look at what sport parachuting was like in the late 50's and early 60's. As a former paratrooper I have to say I got a real kick out of this one.

Having been an army paratrooper in the 50's, this story intrigued me. With his making well over thirten hundred parachute jumps, there are few who could relate a story such as this. I liked his comment about the second jump: many of us felt the same way because of the thrill of the first one, and then the next day we wondered how the hell did we wind up here doing it again. Nice writing, Don.

E. Don Harpe Speaks About Stormchilde - Part 1 Thru 7
When 15 year old Derek Wolfe and his friends learn that millions of dollars of Civil War gold is said to be buried somewhere in Taylor's Woods, they begin exploring the forest at every opportunity. When Derek and Tiffany discover a map in an old deserted house, it triggers a series of events that awaken old ghosts and allows a young girl to find out the truth about herself and her powers. Aided by two ghosts: one a runaway slave and the other a young Cherokee warrior who died on the Trail of Tears, Derek and his friends search for the gold while trying to stay out of the way of the ghost of Colonel Hunnicutt and his monstrous ghost hounds. The hunt for the gold intensifies when Derek's friend Amber Stone learns she is really the Stormchilde, and begins to experiment with her new found powers.

I don't even know if there was a Flat Rock, Georgia, but I do know that Willie Dolan, AKA The Flat Rock Kid, and his rustic old sidekick Walter “Pearly” Parker had a knack for turning the West on it's ear. In the years after the Civil War, the Kid and Pearly drifted from Kansas to Missouri, from Deadwood to Abilene, and when they rode into a cow town, trouble was sure to be on their welcoming committee.

Angel in Amber by E. Don Harpe

Filled with suspense and intrigue this is a story you must read in one sitting, as putting it down is not an option. The author Don Harpe, writes with depth of character and a huge imagination. I have read most of what this author has written and must say that this story is not his usual style. This new style is greatly admired and appreciated I do hope he writes a lot more. I for one will definitely read all that he writes.

Redneck Riviera - E. Don Harpe

E. Don Harpe Speaks About Redneck Riviera:
Being a born and bred southerner as well as a country music songwriter who loves science fiction and southern humor, I decided to combine these elements into a short story about a redneck and an alien who find they have a lot in common. When JorG, from the planet Stubia, makes an emergency landing in rural Alabama, the only witness is Billy Joe White. When Billy Joe offers JorG a couple of beers and then discovers JorG is as much as redneck as anyone in the south, the two immediately begin to bond, and the universe is in for a culture shock.

Talladega Twostep - E. Don Harpe

E. Don Harpe Speaks About Talladega Twostep:
With Redneck Riviera appealing to a large number of readers, the second story in the series was a natural. The idea that a small, green alien from the planet Stubia can be friends with a born and bred southern redneck is an idea that appeals to a lot of people. Some see Billy Joe and JorG as proof that it is possible for us to put aside our differences and concentrate on the things we have in common, and in doing so finding that we really can get along. Of course, some folks don't think that at all, they just think the stories are really funny!

Cottondale Confirmation - E. Don Harpe

E. Don Harpe Speaks About Cottondale Confirmation:
“Cottondale Confirmation”, the third story in the Redneck Riviera short story series, takes aim at how religion is observed in the South, and offers a hilarious look at how it may be seen from someone who has no concept at all of what is going on. JorG doesn't know anything about religion, but he does know the contractor who built the galaxy, and as the little green guy learns something about Sunday morning customs in the South, we learn that there really is a higher power, and that they like grits.

E. Don Harpe Speaks About Music City Mojo:
The funniest, most hilarious, most outrageous Redneck Riviera story yet. In Music City MoJo, the fourth story in the Redneck Riviera short story series, we find Billy Joe, JorG, Jack and the rest of the group heading for Nashville where Cindy is to sing at a cousins wedding. Unknown to the others, Jack takes JorG on a side trip to the hills of east Tennessee and allows the little alien to drink a quart of the illegal homemade whiskey that the locals call White Lightning. After that, as Billy Joe White says, it's all over but the shouting.

The Southern dialect read warm and true, and this was an endearing "vision":

>> He didn't have a church of his own, but he had a huge army surplus tent that he set up frequently, much to the dismay of his immediate family. They usually made up his entire congregation, unless he could come up with ideas to draw a crowd. <<

At that point I had an ah ha! Maybe, Amazon Shorts would draw a crowd for Whitley's voice! Having read into the first few paragraphs, I was cheering in his camp. Even though, as I've mentioned in other reviews, I'm not a churchgoer or a doctrine digester, I enjoy prime humor almost anytime, anywhere, from any clear, un-invested voice.

By un-invested I mean that the talent aims foremost to wide-market entertainment. In that case it's okay by me if the voice also happens to provide intrigue about free-spirited Godly stuff.

Anyone gets my willing grins when he makes good fun out his own understandably fizzled brain sparks:

>> His previous brainstorm hadn't worked out as well as he had planned. It wasn't that it was that bad of an idea. It was just that there wasn't enough people in the community willing to pay five dollars a plate for a "Soul Food" dinner of turnip greens and cornbread--and then having to listen to him preach for two hours. <<

This stepped up to zealous intrigue:

>> Brother Hollis was already planning his sermon for the fish fry, and wasn't about to pass up a chance to make it happen. "Just what do you mean by `Not `zackly legal, Brother Red?" <<

Phil most definitely had the Southern drawl in a tight package:

>> "I've heerd `bout that, Red," Small Tim said. "Pap called hit `callin' catfish, er sompin' lak that." <<

After a few times of these guys mentioning "pushin' catfish aside" to grab something from the cooler, I'z gettin' a mite suspisheeous:

>> Dubya reached behind the seat of his jeep and took out a six-pack of tall-boy Buds, pushed a few catfish aside and dropped it into the cooler. <<

Whitley was good with the descriptive quips which set the atmosphere (note the "squinted ... smoke":

>> "Long as y'all don't mind a'wadin'. How deep is it?" Dubya asked while he lit a Camel and squinted at Tim over the smoke. <<

The concluding scenes of the catfish free-for-all, as they connected to the baptismal banquet were so well wrought and so hilarious, I didn't just laugh uproariously; I wheezed and wheezed, and squeezed my lungs like I used to do regularly as a kid, when something struck me so funny I couldn't stop the giggling fits to breathe. That side-shaking, tear-spewing type of funny bone exercise is the best medicine on heaven or earth. Thank you, Whitley!!

Yep, I agree. A keeper. Just be sure to gut it right, and go for mo.

"Message Board Romance" by Tory Lynn
For the small amount of only forty-nine cents, I was treated to a wonderful evening of reading pleasure. This short story is written well, and has a most enjoyable plot. This new author shows extreme talent and I will definitely read her debut book now in print. " My Charming Protector" I sure hope more will be coming soon.

Roses for Tory Lynn by D. K. Christi, Author, "Arirang: The Bamboo Connection", November 26, 2006

Tory Lynn is a master of dialogue. Her characters in "Message Board Romance" are developed immediately through their conversations and their message board communications. The story moves forward with lightning speed; yet, the character behaviors are clearly logical. Just when it appears all is lost, the story takes a surprising turn that catches the reader totally unaware. This surprise keeps the reader hanging on every word, hoping for a happy ending for the people whose lives had already seen their share of grief and losses. The depth of character development in a short story is a credit to Tory Lynn's talent as an author. This is a wonderful introduction to her writing style and a recommendation to read her book, "My Charming Protector."

Between Us Women - Anne Lebrecht

Anne Lebrecht Speaks About Between Us Women:
Nostalgic and sometimes both humorous and sad as two women meet weekly for lunch. For fifty years, these women have shared their feelings, secrets, thoughts, and tears in conversations over lunch. Quite suddenly, one dark and guarded secret is revealed.

Redefining Sara - Anne Lebrecht

Anne Lebrecht Speaks About Redefining Sara:
I felt a need within me, to write a story about a writer. My muse keeps me in the genre of romance writing. This is the result of that effort. I simply love the city of Montreal in Canada so of course that became the setting for this short story. My muse in this case is an editor, a gentleman called Daniel Slater. He has inspired and encouraged me by rejection when he knew I could do better and acceptance when he felt I had succeeded. I owe much gratitude to this fine young man.

On the Eve of Christmas - Anne Lebrecht

Anne Lebrecht Speaks About On The Eve of Christmas:
As a young child I spent 10 years in a boarding school, the one thing I constantly dreamed of was a Christmas at home. This story I believe is based on a memory of one Christmas I had spent as a young child and before I entered the boarding school at age five. I have never been sure if this memory was factual or one I entertained in my mind for so many years, away from my home. The story has always haunted me, so I felt I had to write it.

Both happy & sad, this one definitely leans more toward the warm/fuzzy department ...

Feels very autobiographical/reads like a slice-of-real-life and the abundant description and attention to detail makes you feel like you really "went there" ...

Thought it wrapped up a little quick and would have liked to have seen more details/clues as to the time period and geographical setting, but, overall, a nice, sweet, sentimental, little story about Christmas and Christmas wishes from a child's perspective ...

How do you express the joy that a child feels at Christmas? How do you tell of the simple wish of a lonely little girl? She doesn't wish for things, just the love of a family, a home to spend Christmas in instead of the sterile boarding school she finds herself in. What joy she finds in the sun breaking through the clouds as she prays for that family. I am sure that the holidays around the Lebrecht House hold were something very special if this story is any indication.

On the Eve of Christmas
By: Ann Lebrecht

With every stroke of Ann's pen, she paints a scene we all believe possible.
A sad but all too often true tale of a child's dreams. Through young Maryann, we see visions of what she deeply desires, then back to the cold reality of what is just beyond her reach, though with the grace of God, attainable.

Passover Memories - Anne Lebrecht

Anne Lebrecht Speaks About Passover Memories:
I was raised Catholic and attended a Catholic boarding school, not knowing my own parents were Jewish. While away at school, I was invited to share a Passover meal with a friend I had made. That meal is what inspired this story. I am now a grandmother myself and as I age, I look back at the past and see so much lost to immaturity and youth. What seemed so insignificant years ago now has more meaning. Passover is a yearly ritual in the Jewish faith, and as children I think we get a little bored with the repetition of the same story each year, whether it is about Easter, Christmas or any religious holiday. We tend to forget the true meaning of the celebration. Over time, I began to feel the importance of that Passover meal I had attended; the warmth of that holiday, and the love I had felt surround me.

Anne Lebrecht Speaks About The Woman Called Mother:
I was never close to my mother and never had a chance to know her, since she died when I was quite young. I then grew close to my father, but often wondered what I had missed. Now as I grow older, I have time to reflect on the past and some of what I learned about her has made me realize how much I am like her. I realize that had she lived we would have been friends. Is this a love story, a supernatural thriller, or a story about recovering from loss? It is all of the above, and is done beautifully. Ms. Parker introduces us to a semi-reclusive writer Nora who is recovering from the loss of her husband, and the earlier loss of her parents by retiring to her Victorian home in upstate NY. She is the town eccentric who takes her horse and wagon to town instead of driving the car her husband left behind. All is as normal as it can be under the circumstances till the night a major thunderstorm knocks out the power and a young girl appears at her door soaked from the rain. To say more might spoil the fun.

My Angel on a Harley - G. L. Parker

G. L. Parker Speaks About My Angel on a Harley:
In a world gone mad, I wrote this tale in hope it will inspire people to look deep within themselves, and encourage those who find themselves on the path I was on to think before they blindly leap into a situation that may possibly destroy those around them, and their own self-worth as well. I guess, if I could wave a magic wand, I would like my words to ease the pain for those who have suffered over love lost. We all make mistakes, but it's how we use that knowledge we gained through our mistakes that makes us who we are. Will it be to better ourselves as human beings or will we just go on making the same mistakes over and over again, never giving thought to those around us who we may hurt? Only the reader can answer that question for themselves.

Reviewer: Tory Lynn (Cedar City, UT USA) - See all my reviews
A rancher knows hard work, rough times and dedication in trying to make it all come together as he makes his living on the ranch he loves so well. Tommy knows this first hand as he tries desperately to get the little calf that decides to run from the herd. He is Thankful that his neighbors and friends are there to help with taking the rest of the herd to their destination as he follows the stray. He thinks of his family warm in their home, missing them as he is out in the cold trying to bring in the lone calf.

Tommy is surprised when he stumbles across a family in need out in the middle of nowhere and of course he jumps right in trying to help in a trying situation.

This is a must read, Mr. Voss knows how to write a warm tale of what family and dedication is. Christmas on the Mesa is a must read any time of the year. I'm looking forward to more stories from Mr. Voss.

In this Amazon Short Edd Voss used prose in its purest form to express raw grief with the barest essence of statements: "The paper blurred as the words began to sink in."

Reading Ben Tucker's recount of feelings in his childhood, I was reminded of another disconnected 15-year-old, a character introduced in Robert B. Parker's Spenser novel, EARLY AUTUMN. Voss wrote about his character, "... he had always felt like he was alone since his parents had died when he was a kid. All through the years of orphanage and foster homes, he had felt alienated and on his own."

In Parker's EARLY AUTUMN, Paul's parents hadn't died; they lived as childless, unconnected individuals. I mention Paul Giacomin because he and Ben each traveled paths, as dramatized through the wisdom of a sensitive author, into healing human connections. The steps in the journeys were different, but the intimacy of the healing shared with readers struck similar chords.

Voss gave a touching description of grave-side sunshine contrasting his devastation. Cool composure was etched by cracks of sad warmth visible only in flowing tears:

>> The cemetery was bathed in sunshine as befit the southern California summertime. While a large crowd was gathered to mourn the loss of this little girl, he still felt isolated. In his mind all he could see was himself standing there all alone, tall and proud in his immaculate dress uniform shining in the midday sun. The brass on his collar and the wings on his chest reflected the sun so that it hurt the eyes to look directly at them. From the soles of his boots to the beret on his head he was the image of everything a soldier should be, till the onlooker glimpsed the tears in his eyes that despite his every effort had escaped and rolled down his cheeks. <<

Voss wrote a perfect "coming to" description, serving as an abrupt, yet gentle transition from a reverie of long past, broken memories, to an easing of the primal fear of damage and grief. The link to present caring was beautifully expressed:

>> His reverie was interrupted by a hand sliding into his. Holding it up so that he could look at it, he marveled as he always did at the beauty of her hand. Totally feminine with well manicured nails, the skin soft as silk yet filled with strength. He had seen that hand do all of the same work that he did and more around the ranch, yet it still was soft to the touch. <<

This story touchingly exposed a man's loss being completed in renewal, as he moved from disconnected childhood, to the intimacy of a soul-mate. The mood flowed in natural patterns through a gauntlet of pain as a man, who had lost parents through death, lost a child to the same gateway, healed the loneliness of his youth, then rested in a blossoming new life filled by children of children of children, and a wife.

With an exquisite economy of caring words, Edd Voss expressed the type of healing growth possible in life. This story gave a gentle touch of that to the reader, and could be read and reread for the feeling of grace.

Well done Voss,
Linda Shelnutt

The word "hunt" is emblematic of all things gruesome, gory, and repellent, though I assure you -- my dear Review Readers -- that Edd Voss attempts to steer clear of sort of thing in his cute little "Shorty Short," THEIR FIRST HUNT.

After having read two of Voss' works now, I'm going to coin a term which perhaps Edd's not heard of himself previously described. Voss is a "scenarist" writer, adept at supplying his readers with slice-of-life portraits depicting cherished moments in time with grandkids, families, soldiers, guts and glory, on the road again or off.

While his interludes last for just a wee number of pages, they remain with you long after your read -- what might otherwise be perceived as JUST an eleven-page thingamabob is in essence much "longer" with the subsequent thinking you'll do over your steaming bowl of corn pone, or while you much through that next quesedilla or that chi-chi plate of polenta. While I admire the Edd-ster's skill is slicing his tangy narrative onion thinner and thinner which each successive take -- Writer as Knife -- this is, as I've already mentioned, now the *second* Edd Voss yarn I've covered in which I felt somewhat short-changed at the station -- creatively, but of course -- by his truncating his stories so prematurely.

As for his writing, save for the occasional typo (trial/trail), yeah sure, Voss definitely *has* the skills, Frank. It's become painfully clear (now with me as his reviewer and de facto editor) that if Edd has just a wee bit more time to let his mind roam like a purple puma, he'd manage to write something huge and satisfying -- Edd's proverbial "Big One" with Freedom Fries -- in more US consumerist terms.

The haunting question remains -- da, da, daaaaaaaa! -- and I shall put this out to him now: why so quick, Edd? Why so short? You drive lorries by day, but are you masquerading as the Flash by nightfall, saving the city from all the dastardly shysters who aim to throttle it?

I only awarded four stars for this little country-style nipper because I love tales about litt'uns. Edd self-describes as such a gracious grand-dad. I gather that all of us can identify magnetically with a grandfather who dotes on his grandkids, pure and simple, with offers of hot cocoa and a loving smack on the backside, like baseball players will sometimes do (have you seen that on the tube?).

I'd love to one day bestow upon him the mark of five.

That, I believe, will only come once Eddy has a chance to pen something of a much more impactful length. Release your inner-Stephen King, Edd. Do it for the sake of your writerly soul! Or have it eat you from within at your own peril. Ahhhhhhh!

For now, this is the best I can say for a writer whom I feel has the requisite talent, but without the prolific output needed to break through the wordy clutter which pervades the marketplace.

Would that about be an accurate statement, Mr. Voss? :-)

Barbara Foster Speaks About Evolution or Revolution:
Are we evolving into a new society of corruptness, immorality and disrespect? Or is it a revolution of those who want change, to change society into a free for all, controlling society by only those in power? Where have all the values gone? It is time to stand up, and change this evolution. We need to revolt to bring back the values of our country, our families and our way of life. Change may be good in one aspect, but the changes we are facing today are not for the good of the people. We are losing our freedoms, not only from our own government, but from sources with enough power to make the changes, whether right or wrong.

Brianna's Story-Living With ADHD - Barbara Foster

Barbara Foster Speaks About Brianna's Story - Living With ADHD:
This story is very close to my heart, as it is about my granddaughter. It was heartbreaking to us to see her behavior, but a relief once we heard the diagnosis. As a family, we were all involved, from learning why she acted the way she did, if we were responsible, and then learning all we could about Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. In writing the story, we hope that maybe another child might be helped, as parents understand why their child acts the way the do, and to seek treatment to help the child.

Robert A. Meacham Speaks About Daimons Disguise:
I have always been intrigued with stories about good spirits versus evil spirits. On one particular restless night, I found myself waking from a nightmare that seemed so real, I documented the encounter, thus Daimon's Disguise. Whether the nightmare was a summation of fears, one thing is for sure; conflicts between good and evil spirits never rest.

Robert A. Meacham Speaks About Customer Service 101- According to the Grocery Industry:
After twenty-five years in the grocery industry, particularly management, I have learned to be a man of many faces. I have taken role of mediator, planner, psychologist, mentor, and president of the complaint department, just to name a few. I wrote Customer Service 101 to show daily goings on of a retail manager and hopefully encourage others to stay the good fight.

Review of Customer Service 101 by Robert Meacham Jr.

I laughed aloud at the detailed events in the life of a grocery store manager. This short story reminds us that real life and the truth is stranger than fiction. I cringed at some parts that could easily have been me. One thing for sure after you read this delightful tale you will never walk into a super market with the same attitude again. This is a lesson on how the customer, can willingly or not, make the life of a manager a nightmare.

Confessions Of A Serial Killer's Son - Richard Neal Huffman

Richard Neal Huffman Speaks About Confessions of a Serial Killer’s Son:
I wrote Confessions of a serial killer's son as a result of so much media coverage of late on this plague to our society. While I'm sure it's been around for many years, it, and its ugly perpetrators, are now making headlines. As a retired cop I watch as some of these murderers' are brought to justice, curious as to what each one is like. I have to ask myself; for each one caught how many are still out there? More important, will you or I encounter one?

Bad Frank - Richard Neal Huffman

Richard Neal Huffman Speaks About Bad Frank:
“Bad Frank” is a story of a two men, one a decent person trying to get by in a harsh world. The other, a brute who knows only violence. The two conflict on their ideas of how to live in this modern world where it takes lots of money to live. While fictional, this story mirrors what we see each day and night on TV. As in real life, the end is sometimes the beginning.

This is the short and violent story of a thug, told with the kind of realism and insight only a writer with direct experience can muster. Without doubt, Neal Huffman has that kind of background. In this story, Frank and his friend take us on a tour of homicidal mania that ends in a way that will surprise you. If you're a fan of crime fiction, you'll enjoy this one. I did.

Holidays With The In-Laws - Meloni Cassidy

Meloni Cassidy Speaks About Holidays with the In-Laws:
Holidays are that time of year for love, bonding, and family loyalty. These get-togethers are spent with our family members, which generally include the in-laws (or outlaws) depending on how one feels about such matters. I wrote this story to bring the in-law matter into clear focus, giving a “no holds barred” account of the reality of the holiday fiasco situation. When insanity rears its ugly head, or one fears knocking someone silly, it's best to handle the situation with a sense of humor. This is what I set out to do, and hope you will enjoy!

Never Again - Rebecca Buckley

Rebecca Buckley Speaks About Never Again:
Recently, Buck Owens, a country music icon and owner of the Crystal Palace in Bakersfield, passed. While reading about him that day, I was reminded of the good times I spent at the Palace seeing Buck perform and all the musicians he presented. During that era I was having a difficult time breaking away from a past love, and those memories flooded my mind. I wrote this piece as a reminder to me, and to give hope to others, and a remembrance of a great music venue.

Never Again was a cleverly written piece that was fun to read. Most of us have loved someone more than they have loved us at some point in our lives and can only wish a twist of fate can serve us at the right time. Rebecca Buckley did a nice job in her story and I look forward to more of what she has written.
